Long Friendships

A Long Friendship Acquires A Fourth Person

Partners join old friendships as permanent additions, and the relationship has to convert from a pair into a group before it can carry on being what it was.

Two people who have been friends for decades usually end up with partners attached, and the friendship has to accommodate them. The conversion is rarely discussed and often clumsy.

A pair and a foursome are different objects

Two old friends have a private register, an accumulated shorthand and a habit of talking about themselves without preamble.

Four people cannot operate that way. Conversation becomes general, references need explaining, and the register moves towards something everybody present can join.

Nothing is wrong with the general version, but it is not the thing either friend was there for, which is why foursomes often feel pleasant and slightly unsatisfying.

Partners are not chosen by the friend

A friendship group formed by choice has been filtered by both people. A partner arrives already selected by one of them, and the other has no say.

Most of the time this is unproblematic. Where it is not, the friend has very little standing to raise anything, since the relationship is not theirs to comment on.

That asymmetry is the source of most quiet awkwardness in these situations, and it is rarely acknowledged directly.

Partners can also carry the friendship

Where the partners get on independently, the friendship gains a second channel and becomes substantially more robust.

Arrangements start being made by whoever is best at making them, and the relationship stops depending on the two original friends both having spare capacity in the same week.

Many long friendships that appear to have survived through devotion have actually been maintained by a partner who kept putting dates in a calendar.

The separate channel usually persists

Most durable old friendships keep a one-to-one strand alongside the group version: a call, a walk, an occasional meeting without partners present.

That strand is where the original register survives, and friendships that lose it entirely tend to become social rather than close.

Protecting it does not require secrecy, only a habit of arranging some contact that is not a couples' evening.

What happens when a partnership ends

A separation reveals how the friendship was actually held. If the couples channel was carrying it, the friendship often lapses along with the relationship.

Where the one-to-one strand survived, it simply resumes, which is one of the more practical arguments for keeping it alive during the years when it seems unnecessary.

The same applies after a bereavement, when the surviving friend is frequently the person best placed to restore ordinary contact rather than sympathy.

Questions readers ask

Are video calls better than phone calls?

For some people, though many find video more effortful and therefore schedule it less. A call that happens beats a better format that does not.

How do I restart with a friend who moved away five years ago?

Propose a specific call with two suggested times, and skip the apology for the gap. Most people accept, and the first ten minutes are the only awkward part.
