Long Friendships

The Friend Who Knew You Before You Were Any Good

A friendship formed before either person had achieved anything sits outside the reputation economy, which makes it uniquely restful and occasionally uncomfortable in equal measure.

Friendships made in adolescence or early adulthood predate whatever either person later became. That timing gives them properties that later friendships cannot acquire.

The relationship was not formed around status

Friendships made later in life form around people as they currently are, which includes their job, their competence and their standing.

An early friendship formed before any of that existed, so none of it is load-bearing. The relationship was built on availability and proximity and continues to rest on them.

This is why such friendships are described as restful. There is nothing to maintain, because the thing being maintained was never a reputation.

They are immune to a bad year

A friendship that formed around somebody's professional identity is exposed when that identity changes. A redundancy or a public failure alters the terms it was built on.

An early friendship has already survived versions of the person that were far less impressive, so a setback does not register as a change in category.

That resilience is the practical reason old friends are so often the ones contacted when something goes badly wrong.

The same history can be constraining

Somebody who knew you at seventeen holds a detailed record of a version you may have deliberately left behind.

That record surfaces in ordinary conversation, usually affectionately, and it can be tiring for a person whose current life is organised around being different.

The friend is rarely doing it to diminish anybody. They are using the material they have, which is mostly old.

Divergence tests them hardest

Early friendships often begin from similar circumstances and then diverge widely in income, education or geography over the following decades.

The divergence is difficult precisely because the friendship has no status framework to absorb it. Two people who never compared themselves suddenly have something obvious to compare.

Those that survive usually keep talking about the shared parts of life rather than the divergent ones, which is less avoidance than sensible use of common ground.

Why they cannot be replaced later

It is possible to make excellent friends at fifty. It is not possible to make a friend who knew you before you had anything to show.

The value is in the timing rather than in the person, which is why people maintain such friendships through long stretches where they have little else in common.

It also explains why losing one is felt as losing access to a period of your own life, not only as losing a companion.

Questions readers ask

Are video calls better than phone calls?

For some people, though many find video more effortful and therefore schedule it less. A call that happens beats a better format that does not.

How do I restart with a friend who moved away five years ago?

Propose a specific call with two suggested times, and skip the apology for the gap. Most people accept, and the first ten minutes are the only awkward part.
