Boundaries
When Work Messages Arrive On A Friendship's Channel
Friends who become colleagues, or colleagues who become friends, end up with one channel carrying two relationships, and the mixing quietly costs both of them.

When a friend and a working relationship exist between the same two people, the messages usually end up in one place. That merge has predictable effects on both relationships.
One channel cannot hold two registers
A friendship channel is answered casually and at leisure. A work channel is answered promptly and carefully, because something depends on it.
Once both arrive in the same place, every message has to be classified before it can be answered, and the classification is often wrong.
A work request received in a relaxed moment gets a casual reply; a friendly message received during work gets a clipped one. Both misfire.
The work displaces the friendship
Work messages carry deadlines and consequences, so they get answered first and answered fully, and they generate follow-ups that also require answers.
Friendship content has no deadline, so it waits, and waiting content frequently stops being sent because the moment for it has gone.
Over months the channel becomes functionally a work channel with occasional pleasantries, without either person having chosen that.
Refusal becomes harder
Declining a work request from a colleague is ordinary. Declining the same request when it arrives beneath a run of friendly messages is noticeably harder.
The friendship supplies a reason to say yes that has nothing to do with the merits of the request, and both parties are aware of it.
This is why people end up doing work they would have refused from anybody else, and then resenting a friend for asking normally.
Availability leaks across
Somebody who knows a friend is awake, on holiday or at home has information a colleague would not have, and that information makes an out-of-hours request feel reasonable.
The request is not unreasonable in itself. It is that the friendship has supplied evidence which overrides the working boundary.
Separation restores the ordinary situation, in which nobody knows whether a message will be seen and everybody therefore waits.
The separation is mechanical, not emotional
Keeping work on a work system and friendship elsewhere solves most of this without any conversation about it being necessary.
Where a conversation is needed, framing it as a filing preference rather than as a limit on the person keeps it small, because that is genuinely what it is.
The relationships also become easier to assess separately, which matters most when one of them is going badly and the other is not.
Where the work involves money changing hands between friends, keeping the terms in the working channel does the same job, since a written record protects the friendship rather than threatening it.
Questions readers ask
How do I stop myself giving advice?
Ask which they want before responding. It takes four words and removes the guess, which is where the whole problem originates.
What if my friend is about to do something obviously unwise?
Say it once, clearly, and then stop. Repetition converts a friend's opinion into pressure, and pressure tends to entrench the decision rather than change it.
